Tent Anchoring: Staking vs. Concrete Ballast – What's the Difference?

Tent anchored with concrete ballasts

One of the most common questions we receive when planning an event is, "How will the tent be secured?" The answer depends on where your tent will be installed.

At KS Events, every tent is professionally anchored to ensure it remains safe and secure throughout your event. Depending on the installation location, we'll either stake the tent into the ground or secure it with concrete ballast (weights).

Staking a Tent

Staking is our preferred anchoring method whenever conditions allow. Large steel stakes are driven deep into the ground and attached to the tent frame, creating a strong and reliable foundation.

Staking is typically used for:

  • Grass fields

  • Parks

  • Open lawns

  • Dirt or other natural surfaces

This method provides excellent stability and is generally included with your tent rental.

When Concrete Ballast Is Required

Some event locations don't allow us to drive stakes into the ground. In these situations, we secure the tent using engineered concrete ballast blocks or other approved weighted anchoring systems.

Concrete ballast is commonly required when a tent is installed on:

  • Parking lots

  • Concrete or asphalt

  • Pavers or decorative hardscapes

  • Areas with underground utilities or irrigation systems

  • Locations where staking is prohibited by the property owner

Because these ballast systems require additional equipment, transportation, and labor, they are typically added as an additional charge to your tent rental.

Why This Matters During Event Planning

If you're planning an event, it's helpful to know what surface your tent will be installed on before requesting a quote. This allows us to recommend the safest anchoring method and provide accurate pricing from the beginning.

Even if your event is on grass, staking isn't always possible. Underground sprinkler systems, electrical lines, drainage, or venue restrictions may require the use of ballast instead. If you're unsure, our team can help determine the best solution.

Safety Is Always the Priority

No matter the installation method, our goal is the same: providing a safe, secure tent that performs as designed. We never compromise on anchoring because proper installation is one of the most important parts of a successful event.

When you work with KS Events, we'll inspect your venue, discuss any site restrictions, and recommend the appropriate anchoring method so there are no surprises on installation day.

If you have questions about your event site or would like a quote, contact our team today. We'll help determine whether staking or concrete ballast is the right solution for your event and ensure your tent is installed safely and professionally.
